Yes, I do have the privilege of being part of a minority within a minority; part of a generation prior to mine, my older brothers and sisters who led the way towards the fight for equality. They, the most educated and privileged generation ever to exist in America. They were decimated by the AIDs epidemic before they could enjoy the benefits of their struggle. GLBT, remember this acronym? A generation of people, of various races who were present at that time – the leaders/leadership that had a strategy, for better or worse – Legacy. A generation that left behind a power vacuum within our community when they were needed most.
Yes, I am an American of Mexican descent, bi lingual, multi-cultural, a hyphenated American who was born into a working-class family who came from the privileged class of migrant workers. I had parents who worked seven days a week, and raised me to never forget our past – our humble beginnings. So, if you believe this is something to hold against me – fine.
I was born at the tail end of the Boomers and the start of Generation X. Baby Boomers - (circa 1946 to 1964) Generation X (circa 1965 to 1980) Millennial Generation (circa 1981 to 1996) Gen Z (post-Millennial) (circa 1997 to 2012)
But I won’t apologize for where I am and what I’m fighting for: My generation, was born and raised at the height of our potentiality – the America where equal rights and upward mobility were still part of the fabled American Dream. As a whole, my generation failed to lead the way. Yes, we all have benefited from that 60’s-70’s generation that grew up and fought for our rights while we enjoyed and splurged on all the sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll we could get our hands on, period.
I admit this, but all of you, who are part of the generations that came after us – are you guiltless of the same crime you wish to punish us for? I can see and understand why the TQ+ community feels this way, but are you sure that your experience and leadership skills can and will do a better job? Do you expect that those who came before you, are going to just stand idle and let you lead unconditionally – in the same manner you now approach and judge us?
Did it ever occur to you and/or your leadership, that in that power vacuum, you hijacked the cause and are now playing the roles of judge, jury, and executioners. Are you sure that the timing in history is on your side – to win. Because, the stakes are way higher than they were in the past – A world that prays for all of us to stumble, fail, and fall so all our freedoms are taken – leaving no one to benefit from all the struggles and suffering we’ve all endured?
Consequently, while YOU wage THIS war against US, the “older” LGBT cisgender people; the world is patiently waiting for our system to fail. Because, never in all of humankind’s history have we been here, at this point and place in time. We face socio-political, economic, environmental/ecological ruins. You speak about sustainability - who, what, where, when, and why?
We’re all that’s left! Are you sure you want to “cancel” us before it’s too late, so that you and everyone who can join together, can redeem themselves, and perhaps avoid an ending to “life” as we have known it – the possibility of change and true progress for all parties involved and vested in the final outcome – of our LGBTQ+ history.
